Hah! And they said hip hop was dead…

September 26, 2007 at 3:28 pm (East Coast, Hip Hop, Midwest rap, Music, Shits and giggles)

kanyewest.jpgI’m a bit late with this, but as you know, in an ill-advised publicity stunt, possibly set up by Interscope, 50 Cent has challenged Kanye West. Their albums, Curtis and Graduation dropped the same day, September 11th. Little while after that, country singer Kenny Chesney, in an equally ill-conceived publicity stunt, possibly encouraged by his own record label as well, also decided to throw his hat into the ring:

”It’s funny how with every record that comes out, we’re aware of the urban [competition], and none of those acts acknowledge that I exist, until I have that No. 1 debut on the Top 200,”

Of course they don’t acknowledge you, you’re not a rapper. Well, as of last week, Kanye West pulled into a staggering lead with with over 950 thousand copies, making this year’s highest selling album thus far. 50 didn’t do badly himself, as he bought in over 64ok. In last place, Kenny boy could barely manage to pull over half that number, with over 370 thousand.

And they said hip hop was dead…

On a side note, 50 promised to retire if Kanye outsold him, and it remains to be seen if he will keep his word. As a fan of both artists, I hope this isn’t the case.

Esham Box Set

October 1, 2006 at 6:53 pm (Esham, Hip Hop, Midwest rap, Music)

For those of you who don’t know, the Esham Box Set is now available. Order it from http://www.acidrap.com. Supplies are limited (with only 1000 being pressed up in all), so grab one while it’s hot. I’ll have a review here shortly.  For those of you wondering what I’m talking about, it’s a 6- disc box set from the godfather of acid rap himself, Esham.  It contains remastered versions of his classic albums Judgement Day vol 1 and 2, the unreleased volumes 3 & 4, the new LP martyr city, and a DVD.

Esham Box set controversy

July 31, 2006 at 11:19 am (Esham, Hip Hop, Midwest rap, Music)

For those of you who don’t read the Acidrap.com/DestronHQ.com message boards, there’s some shady shit going on concerning Esham’s box set. The sets, which were supposed to be sent out this past June (6/6/06), still have not arrived. For those of you who don’t know about them, the box set is a set containing Judgement Day Volumes 1 and 2 as well as the unreleased 3 and 4. In addition, the set will supposedly contain a new DVD as well as an all new LP from Esham, Martyr City.  The box set was originally supposed to be a $100 donation via paypal, but then there was an apparent $10 shipping charge.   People expressing thier concern about them or asking for refunds have not been answered. To add further fuel to the fire, this popped up on a Destron HQ post a few weeks ago, from the artist who worked on the new album. This had originally showed up at Acidrap.com but the mods there kept deleting it:

Just wanted to introduce myself to all those fans out there who are wondering where the box set is. I’m Sean, I did all the artwork for the upcoming boxset including that “Devil Baby” for the Martyr Sity disc. Thing is, I’m just as pissed about this box set shit as you are, not only because it’s been delayed, but because that buster TJ hasn’t paid me yet for my services. That’s right, I worked on the artwork for a shitload of hours, yet have heard nothing from TJ or Esham about settling up their debts since they wrote me some fucked up email saying payment was one the way two weeks ago. I can’t believe you, as fans, are actually sitting back and listening to this bullshit about the box set not shipping–sounds like something out of a major label record shop and not someone who thinks he’s “underground” and keeping on the level of those of us who are appreciative of his craft and are working for ourselves on our own art and music. So for all of you out there, here’s the links to the artwork for the box set early, since these fuckers are obviously not going to pay me for my services–just look at what I’ve cooked up per Esham’s specs–artwork that’ll be used in a boxset that is late as fuck and is backed by nothing but bullshit excuses for late shipping. Have fun with your fake ass “martyr”.

More drama about the situation can be found here.

I must say, I’ve known TJ (Acid Tongue) ever since the Overcore days and he’s always been cool towards me. However, this is no way for Esham to treat his fanbase who has stuck with him over the years. I sincerley hope this gets straightened out A.S.A.P. However, with all the drama between the new Acidrap.com and the old (that’s a whole nother story), I sincerley doubt it.

On a side note, where the hell is that TNT suicide bomber?

Who is Esham?

June 21, 2006 at 6:56 pm (Esham, Hip Hop, Midwest rap, Music)

esham.jpgEsham is Detroit's most prolific rapper.  He's been a fixture in the Detroit underground rap scene since the late 80s, and his music has inspired many of it's artists, not the least among them being Eminem, Insane Clown Posse, and the late Proof.  He has released over 20 albums, both as a solo artist and as a member of his group NATAS.  You can learn more about him over at http://www.acidrap.com, and soon I woll be bringing my tribute page back over to this new site.
